Winter 2008-2009 Refit | Thursday, December 11, 2008
Earlier in the week, I applied
small amounts of Alexseal fairing filler to a few places on
the hull where I'd located some minor depressions--a tiny
gouge here and there. With the filler now cured, this
morning I sanded the areas by hand with a sanding block and
120 grit, and then cleaned the hull once more to remove the
new dust, plus residual dust from the hull sanding last
weekend.
Next, I applied a strip of
masking paper beneath the tape near the waterline, to
protect the area beneath the tape from overspray. This
completed the basic preparations required for high-build
primer, so I straightened things up, blew off the dust from
the plastic covering the boat, and then thoroughly washed
the shop and staging with water to remove the coating of
blue dust everywhere. This work consumed a little over
an hour's time. |

Later in the day, just before getting ready to apply the
high-build primer, I solvent-washed the hull again, this
time with Alexseal wipe-down solvent, and then, once the
solvent had evaporated, tacked off the hull to remove final
bits of dust. I prepared the spray equipment,
breathing apparatus, and the primer itself, and then applied
4 coats of Alexseal 302 Super Build primer to the hull over
an elapsed period of 3.5 hours. Normally, I'd use only
three coats, but I felt the first two coats had been a
little thin, and after the third coat I could still see
through the primer in a few places--it would have been thick
enough, but since I had enough mixed primer for another
coat, I decided to go with the 4th coat for good measure. |
